Jesus Jones Doubt 2015

Jesus Jones Doubt 2015

Jesus Jones - Factory Theatre (Sydney) & Corner Hotel (Melbourne) March 2015

Who Where Why?  Fans will know that as track 2 from Jesus Jones’ second album Doubt.  And it begs the question – Who Where and Why?

The who is Jesus Jones, where is the Australian Tour March 2015 and why is to mark the 25th anniversary of the album Doubt.  Doubt being the album that gave the band their much deserved success.  Released in 1991 it sounds as refreshing today as it did back then.  The album sported three top 10 US hit singles (Real Real Real, International Bright Young Thing and the world wide smash #1 Right Here Right Now).  Right Here Right Now though is not necessarily representative of the band – its a classic pop song, which has all of the hallmarks of song writer Mike Edwards – great use of samples, a jiggling bass line that jumps out at you and enough hooks to catch anyone off guard.  It is a classic Jesus Jones song but with an injection of commercialism (not that this is a band thing).  The wikipedia page for the album provides the following :Warning This album contains extreme sounds which could damage musical equipment when played at high volume.  And that ladies and gentlemen IS Jesus Jones!

I first photographed the band in September 2011.  After posting my images of that show online, the band contacted me to compliment me what I had captured.  Naturally I was chuffed – there is no greater compliment.  Iain the band manager and keyboard player said that if they were ever in town (down under) again then he would like me to photograph them again and also provide me greater access.   Wow!  And low and behold, they announced a new tour in 2015 – and true to his word Iain emailed me and invited me to photograph them.  How could I refuse?  I will admit that I have followed the band for years – since their first Australian Tour in support of Liquidizer when they played at the Marquee Club in Sydney (talking to the band they remembered the show all of those years ago – commenting upon how low the stage was).  It was undoubtedly (pun intended) the best gig I have been to.  Mostly because I went with a good friend of mine without having heard any of their music before – we read a review of the band in the local music rag and thought why not.  The first song they played that night was Move Mountains and the crowd erupted – taking us along with it.  One of those moments I will never forget.

Fast forward almost 30 years and here they were again, touring Australia – personally invited to capture their shows.  30 years you may say?  Don’t be fooled – Age has not wearied them – this band would put the majority of new bands to shame.  This is a band that knows how to kick it live.  They always have and I believe that they always will – its part of the bands DNA.  This tour I traveled to Melbourne and also saw them in my own home town of Sydney.  The highlight for me was access to the sound check at the Corner Hotel in Melbourne – this enabled me to see a side of the band that I haven’t seen before and to capture that in my images.

Anyway – enough of the talk and more of the images.. looking back on the images I took in September 2011 (which I was proud of at the time) – they really don’t compare to these ones here.
